01 / READING A NAME

One stroke, five perspectives.

一

Start with the characters

One sound can have many Hanja spellings. First choose the characters actually used in the name. Korean readings and general stroke counts come from Unicode 17.0 Unihan data.

二

See the calculation

Explore background, choices, learning, relationships, and the whole name through five grids. A virtual stroke is used where a surname or given name has one character. Every card shows the actual counts and formula.

三

Read with an open mind

These original stories use five-grid and element symbolism for reflection. They are not an 81-number fortune verdict or an automatic assessment of original strokes. They do not predict a future or rank the worth of a name.

Read the counting rules

General counts use the first kTotalStrokes value in Unihan. Counts can vary with form and convention, and may differ from Kangxi original-stroke rules. The list does not certify official personal-name character eligibility.

Let S be surname strokes and G given-name strokes. Heaven=S+(1 for a one-character surname); Personality=last surname+first given character; Growth=G+(1 for a one-character given name); Overall=S+G; Relationship=Overall−Personality+applicable virtual strokes. Other conventions can differ.

Final digits 1–2 connect to Wood, 3–4 Fire, 5–6 Earth, 7–8 Metal, and 9–0 Water. Practical reflections draw on these images. The same element has a different story in each grid.

The same Hanja surname and count can share a Heaven value across different ancestral seats. Verified clan history is linked only when a matching seat is entered. Historical records and literary metaphors are labeled separately; a name does not establish lineage or personality.

The characters of your name

↳ The name-reading app does not store your name on a server.

Enter Hangul and select Hanja, or enter known Hanja directly: 김 / 민수 or 金 / 民秀. Latin-letter names are not converted to Hanja.

Compound surnames and one-character given names are supported. Hanja fills its count and a Korean reading. Check the editable Hangul syllable; the reading is addressed using the Korean spelling you confirm.

Hanja alone cannot establish an ancestral seat. Enter it if known to add verified history to the Heaven card. You can leave this blank.

History available: Papyung Yoon, Gimhae Kim, Jeonju Lee, and Miryang Park.

Defaults use Unicode general strokes. You may edit a count from a convention you know; edits are marked separately.
